What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is the Medical-Dental specialty dedicated to diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the supporting tissues of the teeth: Gingiva, Alveolar Bone, and Periodontal Ligament (fibers that join the tooth to the bone).

Gingivitis and Periodontitis

The most common periodontal diseases are Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and Periodontitis (inflammation that leads to loss of bone and gums). There is a high prevalence of these diseases in the population, so periodic observation by an oral health professional is essential for an early diagnosis of periodontal disease. Periodontitis is a significant cause of tooth loss in adults.
